Throne of Maximian

Ivory carving was used in many luxury Byzantine scupltures. The throne is the largest single Late Antique work of art made of ivory, and derives attraction from its elaborate carvings. On the lower border of the front of the seat two lions guards the vase from which the vine emerges.
