Of Earth 196 independent countries, San Marino is the fifth smallest and the most curious. It is the only survivor of Italy's once powerful city-state network, and it has the status of the world's
oldest surviving sovereign state and the oldest republic. Measuring 61 sq Km, is made up of nine minicipalities. Cittą di San Marino is not the largest town but is the only Unesco-listed capital.
