St. Goar

St. Goar, at the foot of Rheinfels Castle, together with St. Goarshausen, controls the narrows of the Rhine opposite the Loreley Rock. The castle, which resisted the attacks of Louis XIV, was the strongest fortress in the valley until it was dismantled by French troops in 1797.
