Aachen Cathedral Treasure

A precious Ottonian bucket (lat. situla) for holy water. Carved out of the tusk of an elephant, the small vessel refers to the architecture of Aachen's St. Mary's Church (now the cathedral). It picks up on their octagonal floor plan, the two-storey structure and the columns of the upper ambulatory.
