Mary shrine lock. Since 1349, the Marian shrine in the choir of Aachen Cathedral has been opened every seven years. At the end of each shrine trip, the shrine is locked with a specially made padlock. This is to symbolically ensure that no one opens the shrine until the next pilgrimage to the shrine.
