In 1521, the Pope of Rome issued a bull of excommunication against Luther. The young Emperor Charles V convened the Diet of Worms for this purpose and invited the religious reformer to appear. Luther attended the meeting, protected by the imperial safe-conduct, but refused to retract his theses. Charles V ordered his writings to be burned and imposed the penalty of exile.
