Marmorkirken

When work began, in 1749, it was assumed that the Marmorkirken would be constructed of marble imported from Norway. However, it quickly became apparent that the cost of such work would exceed the financial resources of the treasury and in 1770 work was abandoned. A century later the building was completed using local Danish marble.
