According to legend, Nisyros was created when god Poseidon cut with his trident a piece of the island of Kos at the pursuing of giant Polyvotis during the Clash of the Titans. The giant was buried under the island and hence believed that the periodic vibrations of the island is none other than the ongoing chest of the titan while he groans buried beneath the earth.
