The exterior of the Este Castle continues to maintain essentially the appearance it had in the second half of the 16th century. Thus, it continues to preserve the large water moat that surrounds the castle, and has three entrances with drawbridges, preceded by masonry ravelins. The fourth entrance, to the east, was sacrificed to make way for the kitchens.
