The Berlin-born sculptor Heinrich Götschmann (1857-1929) created the Martinsbrunnen in 1902, thereby creating a monument to an old custom that took place every year in rural Germany around the time of St. Martin's Day: paying the farmers' rent in kind and often fat geese.
