Situated on the banks of the river Neckar, Heidelberg although was not parto of the Rhineland-Palatinate region was included in our travel due its proximity.
For centuries it was a centre of political power, with a lively and influential cultural life. In 1386, Germany's first university was established here by the Elector
Ruprecht I. In the late 17th century, French incursions totally destroyed medieval Heidelberg, including its castle. The town was subsequently rebuilt in the
early 18th-century in Baroque style.
