Rhineland-Palatinate 2024

Maria Laach is a true masterpiece of German and European Romanesque architecture. The Abbey stands next to the Laacher See, a lake formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. It was started to built in 1093 at the behest of Heinrich II. Until secularization in 1802, the Abbey was the home of the Benedictines. Since 1892 the church has once again been resounded with Gregorian chants.
