Koblenz, located where the Mosel flows into the Rhine, was founded by Romans who stablished a military stronhold here, calling it Castrum at confluentas (the camp at the confluence). From the Middle Ages until the 19th century, was the seat of the powerful archbishop-electors of Trier. Today it is a modern city which attracts many visitors as is the nothern gateway to the Romantic Rhine.
