One of Germany's oldest towns, Trier was founded in 16 BC as Augustua Treverorum, suppossedly by the Emperor Augustus himself. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1986, the handsome university city is home to Germany's finest ensemble of Roman monuments as well as architectural gems from later ages. It is also the birthplace of Karl Marx.
